Mum's battle as she says no one at college trained to support son

A mum of a teenage boy says she has always had to battle 'for every scrap of education' her son has received in his lifetime as the fight continues. Daniel Franklin should have started at a Nottinghamshire college in September but his mum says a county council has failed to make the necessary arrangements to allow him to enrol.

The 16-year-old, who lives in Ilkeston, has a tracheostomy, complex medical health and autism. As a result of these conditions, he has a legally-binding education health care plan (EHCP) in place which states that long-term goals for Daniel include accessing education, to be included in social activities at school and preparing for all aspects of adult life and to develop the ability to live as independently as possible.

However, his mum Julie Potter-Tate said that in order to do this, Daniel needs trained staff to care for his medical needs and Derbyshire County Council, which Ilkeston sits under, is not putting this in place. She explained the situation to Nottinghamshire Live sister publication, Derbyshire Live.
