Mum 'proud' of 12-year-old son after challenging him to do the big shop at Asda

A mum who let her 12-year-old son loose in Asda to do the weekly shop has been left very impressed by his budgeting skills.

Kelly Miller Richards says her son Vinnie would love to be a chef one day, and in order to challenge him, she let him pick out all their shopping for the week as well as cooking several dinners too.

He was allocated a budget of £50 to get everything he needed for cooking the five evening meals, and not only did he manage to get all the ingredients, but he also came back with change.

Liverpool Echo reports Kelly shared her son's achievement in a Facebook group for families who are trying to get better at budgeting and saving money.

The County Durham mum posted: "So I gave my son Vinnie a challenge, I told him to do a shop and make five meals out of £50 for five of us... and he has pulled it off on only £36.14. (He gets to keep the change).

"He added fruit, water and milk in as well. He also cooked his first meal tonight was lovely.

"The meals are spag bol with crusty bread, chicken korma with rice, a cooked breakfast, crispy chicken wraps with salad and chips, and a spaghetti carbonara. He wants to be a chef when he's older, I am so proud of him twelve years old and doing this". [sic]

Thousands of people liked Kelly's post and were full of praise for Vinnie's budgeting and culinary skills.

One mum said: "I love this idea, I think I might challenge my 14-year-old to do this".

Another said: "Please could I borrow him! He's better than my husband!", and a third said: "Can I just say this is absolutely brilliant I did similar with my son who wanted to be a chef! His 23 now and did make it as a pro chef".
