Mum only finds out she is having triplets seven months into her pregnancy

A mum has told of her “total shock” at learning she was to have triplets and “can barely remember” the moment she was told during an ultrasound scan.

Genevieve ‘Genna’ Knox, a teacher from San Diego, California, says that up until 20 weeks, in 2019, she thought she was having a typical pregnancy with apparently one baby and it was only then that she learnt that there was also a second child on the way.

And then incredibly she was given the news after another nine weeks that there were in fact three babies.

Genna, 38, and her husband Kyle aimed to have a second child along with six-year-old son Liam, but they were also aware that she was at an advanced maternal age.

She said that she did not have a scan after her first trimester because of having extensive prenatal testing.

“I started having kids later in life and I didn’t know if I’d even be able to have one, we were overjoyed,” she told TODAY.com, about having triplets.

She says they feel like the “luckiest people in the world”.

The first surprise came when she was told after her 20-week pregnancy scan that she was having twins.

“She’s like, ‘Wait, you’re having twins?’ And I said, ‘No I’m not,’” Genna said. “Then I looked up and I could see clear as day that there were two babies.”

And the family at that stage were wondering how they were going to adapt to having three children in total - discussing needing a bigger car.

But that was before they got the shock of their lives over triplets.

Genna said that she was only really thinking of having the four-dimensional scan after 29 weeks as a keepsake and something to show their families.

And then when she was having the scan she said that she began to get concerned when the ultrasound technician took so long to speak to her.

“Finally he goes, ‘How far along were you when you found out you were having twins?’ And I said, ‘Oh, gosh you’re not going to believe it,’ and then I told him what happened at the 20-week scan,” Genna added.
