Mum may need skin graft after being burnt by sparklers that caught fire

A mother has warned of the dangers of sparklers following a New Year’s Eve incident that left her with severe burns.

Hannah Beadnall claims sparklers she bought burst into flames as she was lighting them as she and her family prepared to enjoy the midnight countdown, as well as her son’s ninth birthday. The 31-year-old clung onto them so she could safely drop them away from her children, but in doing so she received nasty blisters to her hand, reports Teesside Live.

Despite holding on to them for just a few seconds, her injuries were that bad that she may now require a skin graft. She explained: “My friend had bought fireworks and while I was in town getting my son’s presents I went into One Beyond to get some balloons and I picked up some sparklers.

“When it got to the countdown at midnight we were all outside. I’d put the sparklers on my knee to straighten them up and as I started to light them, instead of sparkling and burning down, they set on fire in my hand.

“All of the children were around me so I couldn’t fling them. They all had waterproof tracksuits on and I was worried it could set them alight.

The awful blisters that developed on Hannah's hand were due to the flaming sparklers (Hannah Beadnall)

“I had to keep hold of them in my hand until the kids moved back, when I could drop them it had already done really bad damage to my hand. One of my friends messaged me to say the same thing happened to them, but thankfully no one was hurt.”

Large blisters and open wounds developed on her hand. Hannah says a friend who is an accident and emergency nurse, came to her aid.

The following morning she went to Redcar Primary Care Hospital, where medics cut the blisters and dead skin from her hand. She said: “I’ve got no feeling in part of my hand so they’re referred me to the specialist clinic at James Cook (in Middlesbrough).

“They wanted to keep me in, but I’ve got four children so I’ve been told to keep it elevated which I’m doing at home. They’ve given me a cast which keeps my hand in the air.

“I need to go back to see if I will need a skin graft. As an adult to see the damage it’s done to my hand I dread to think what it could have done to the kids.”

Housekeeper Hannah has reported the incident to the One Beyond store in Middlesbrough and hopes to raise awareness of the dangers following the terrifying ordeal.

One Beyond were contacted and they said its product safety manager has been informed and a full investigation will be carried out.
