Mum makes own butter for £2 as Lurpak prices soar to more than £7 in some shops

Amid the cost of living crisis, we're all looking for ways to cut out day to day spending and bills.

As prices of common products begin to rocket, thrifty thinkers are looking for alternative methods to ultimately get the same for less.

Hayley Louise Minns has made her own butter for just £2 to beat the rising price of Lurpak - which currently costs £7.25 a tub in some shops.

The part-time nurse wasn't impressed when she spotted that the spread reached a record high over the weekend.

Supermarkets took drastic action to protect the product - that was soaring in price - with security tags.

Mum-of-four Hayley, 39, made her own butter by using two 300ml pots of cream that she already had in the fridge - which cost just £1.05 each.

It worked perfectly - and she even used some of it to make buttermilk pancakes.

She said: "I was cleaning my fridge and noticed I had almost two full pots of cream in there.

"I knew I wouldn't use them - my husband forgets what he has bought sometimes and gets more - and I didn't want it to go to waste.

"I kept seeing all these memes on Facebook about the price of Lurpak, so thought I'd see if I could make it into butter as I know I'd use that.

"I remember a little while ago, I did the same with ice cream as I had too much cream and about eight bananas overripe that the kids wouldn't eat - so I turned it into banana ice cream and googled how to make caramel sauce.

"I like messing about in the kitchen.

"People say you must have too much time on your hands, but seriously, I don't, as I have four young children including a set of four-year-old twin boys that keep me very busy!

"I just make time for stuff as I like to cook from scratch and not have as many additives and stuff in my food that I don't know what it is.

"We used to buy Lurpak regularly but then switched to the Aldi version as we have with lots of branded things.

"We switched to Aldi products a while ago when we had just the two children and obviously, from having a family, your food bills increase.

"The butter turned out lovely! I gave some to my neighbour and made her a buttermilk pancake - I always cook for her as she's elderly and on her own.

"She put the butter on top of the pancake and said it was delicious. I'll definitely make it again, but use a muslin cloth this time to help squeeze the excess buttermilk out."

Away from her cost-effective thinking, Hayley lives with her husband and steel erector Paul Minns, 39.

She also lives with daughters ten and eight - and four-year-old twin boys.

Whilst Hayley was resourceful with making her own butter - bargain hunters can actually make the homemade butter for even less.

When you're able to get your hands on cream at a discount price then your butter will cost a jaw-dropping 36p.
