Mum accuses friend of 'lying' after reaction to 'classic' but 'bland' baby name

A woman has been accused of "lying" after her reaction to her pregnant friend's choice of name for her unborn baby.

The woman doesn't "personally" like her pregnant friend's chosen name but to avoid offending her, she "automatically" responded that it was "nice". Later, her friend contacted her via WhatsApp to ask her if she did in fact like the name because she got the "feeling" that she didn't.

Unsure of what to do, and describing herself as a "s*** liar", the woman took to Mumset's popular Am I Being Unreasonable (AIBU) thread to seek advice and to ask whether she should carry on lying to spare her friend's feelings, or whether she should admit she doesn't like the name. Her pregnant friend has chosen the name Susan for her unborn child.

The woman titled her post "[AIBU] To tell my friend that I’m not keen on her baby name?" and penned: "Friend told me today she has chosen the name Susan for her baby. I don't like it personally but automatically said "oh, that's nice".

"She's just WhatsApp me asking if I really liked the name as she got the feeling that I didn't (oops, I'm a s*** liar). Would I be unreasonable to admit that I don't? Or should I carry on lying about it? (Which I can do easier via WhatsApp!)"

What do you think of the name Susan for a new baby? Let us know in the comments section below.

The woman's post was met with a flurry of responses from fellow Mumsnet users, keen to share their thoughts. One suggested she reply: "It's not a name that I would choose, but it's not my baby. If you love the name, use it."

Another said: "Keep your honest opinion to yourself, she won't thank you for it. While I agree it's not a name I love, she clearly does love it."

A third was a fan of the name and commented: "It's a great classic name. Susie, Suze, Sue all cool shortened versions. Every Susan I've ever known has been a fab person!"

Another Mumsnet user said: "This is why there should be a 'health warning' on all pregnancy testing kits - "do not discuss or tell anyone other than the father of your child, the name before they are born"." And another said: "Don't tell her you don’t like it, you'll just upset your friend. It's a fairly 'normal' name and not like she's saddling a child with something really embarrassing. At worst it's a bit bland but she could be a Suzy if she ever wants a nickname."

Another commented: "You don't tell her you don't like her choice of name. It's not your baby she's naming, it's hers. You say it's a lovely classic name and you're so excited that you'll all soon be meeting her baby. That's how a supportive friend behaves."

And another suggested she respond: "'I was just surprised. It’s not a name you hear much now.' Don't say what you think."

In a follow up comment, the woman added: "I went with this: 'it's not that I don’t like it, it's just not a name you hear much anymore [smiley face emoji] Will she have a middle name? X' she didn't reply [awkward face emoji]." At the time of writing, 74% of Mumsnet users voted the woman was being unreasonable.
