Multiple people struck while dining on patio in hit and run on Near North Side, police say

CHICAGO — Two men and three women were injured by a hit-and-run driver Friday night while they were dining at an outside patio in the Old Town neighborhood on the Near North Side, Chicago police said.

About 10:30 p.m., officers responded to a traffic crash and found multiple people hit by a vehicle in the 1200 block of North Wells Street.

According to police, an unidentified driver traveling south in a silver Lexus tried to pass a white Toyota Prius headed in the same direction. When the driver of the Lexus attempted to go around the Prius, the driver clipped the Prius and lost control and jumped the curb, striking several victims who were dining at an outside patio, police said.

The driver of the Lexus fled the scene on foot once the vehicle came to a stop.

The driver of the Prius was not injured, but a 26-year-old man suffered bruising to the back, and another man, 32, had a laceration to the elbow. Both were taken to St. Mary’s Hospital in good condition. A woman, also 26, was taken to the same hospital with an injured foot, police said.

Two other women, 26 and 24, suffered broken legs, and were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital were they were listed in fair condition.

No one was in custody, and detectives were investigating.
