Multi-million pound Annan harbour regeneration plans submitted to Dumfries and Galloway Council

Plans for a multi-million pound regeneration of Annan harbour have been formally submitted to the council.

A detailed design statement, prepared by Arc Architects on behalf of Annan Harbour Action Group (AHAG), outlines proposals to transform the “forgotten” area with a lagoon for watersports.

And a bid has been made to the UK Government’s Levelling Up fund for £8.6 million to help pay for the scheme with a response due in the autumn.

The 35-page document details Annan’s heritage of fishing, trade, smuggling and shipbuilding as part of its proposal to update the area.

The statement said: “Over the last hundred years that traditional life has faded, leaving Annan’s waterfront half forgotten, blighted by disused buildings and contaminated land, derelict ships abandoned in a silted-up harbour and the Harbour Authority moribund. It is time for a new chapter.”

That new chapter includes building a dam, a bridge, raised walkways and a lagoon for kayaking, paddle-boarding, rowing, sailing and swimming.

A cafe, heritage exhibition and activity spaces are also planned for the site. AHAG said the aims of the project are to create a cultural attraction to bring in visitors, jobs and money to the area and “restore natural biodiversity”.

The group is in the process of taking ownership of the “run-down” warehouse known as Collett’s building, a derelict area called Minister’s Merse and they hope to take on the quayside as key areas of the regeneration.
