After a three-year hiatus, Mugler made its return to the runway last night with a gloriously gutsy couture SS23 show presented in onetime slaughterhouse (turned cultural complex) Grand Halles de la Villette in Paris.
Closing the final day of an unusually buzzing couture week, runway regulars Irina Shayk, Paloma Elsesser, Adut Akech, Mona Touugard and Anok Yai were joined by old school supers Amber Valletta, Debra Shaw and Eva Herzigova plus some unexpected faces: American talk show host Ziwe, actress Dominique Jackson and Venezuelan musician Arca.
The fierce and fabulous cast zoomed down the catwalk on the back of a TV dolly, hair flicking, slut dropping and stiletto stomping in black leather corsets and chaps, dominatrix dresses and barely-there denim belt skirts.
The brand’s famous illusion bodysuits — loved by everyone from Megan Thee Stallion and Billie Eilish — were a focus, along with negligee lace camis with semi-sheer lace-up front cycling shorts and oversized biker jackets with inbuilt gloves.
Since he took the helm in 2018, American designer Casey Cadwallader has succeeded in reviving the 1973-founded brand with all the highly sexed, rebellious spirit it had been famous for under its late founder Thierry Mugler. And last night was most definitely no exception.
