The 2024 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) are almost approaching, and the opportunity to witness live performances from Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, and Megan Thee Stallion should be reason enough to watch.
When the VMAs were first introduced in 1984, they wanted to stand out from some of their more sombre rivals' award shows. Fortunately, their light-hearted and playful approach has worked to their advantage.
We have had many memorable moments from the show including Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines performance, Beyoncé confirming her pregnancy, Lady Gaga’s costumes and Kanye West’s infamous interruption of Taylor Swift.
Is it looking like it might be another memorable year for the VMAs? Here’s everything you need to know about this year’s Awards.
When are the 2024 VMAs?
The 2024 MTV VMAs will take place on Thursday, September 12, starting at 1am BST.
The VMAs will take place at Long Island's UBS Arena this year instead of the Prudential Centre in New Jersey as they have in the past few years.
Originally scheduled to show on September 10, the 2024 VMAs have been rescheduled for the following day in order to avoid conflicting with Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump's US presidential debate. The 23rd commemoration of of 9/11 will also be included the program.
Who is performing?
Pop sensations Roan and Carpenter are on the list of performers that MTV has released so far, along with Halsey, Megan Thee Stallion (who is this year's host and a nominee), Lenny Kravitz, Shawn Mendes, Rauw Alejandro, LL Cool J, Karol G, GloRilla, Anitta, Benson Boone, and Lisa.
Halsey will play a song off their upcoming fifth album, and Kravitz will make his eagerly anticipated comeback to the awards presentation, performing live for the first time in twenty-five years. The 60-year-old singer of Fly Away is also nominated for best rock this year. However, tune in on the night of the event for any unexpected celebrity appearances.
The nominees
Taylor Swift is unsurprisingly in the lead after receiving an astounding 12 nominations. By the end of the evening, she may break Beyoncé's record of 25 wins as a solo artist - or 29 if you include her collaborations with Jay-Z and Destiny's Child - to become the most successful woman in VMA history. Other celebrities in the "multiple-nom" category include Eminem, Sabrina Carpenter, Ariana Grande, Post Malone, and others.

Voting is now open on MTV’s website. You can vote every day until the day of the Awards.
