Michigan State’s start to the 2023-24 season is historically bad.
With another loss on Tuesday night — this time the Spartans’ Big Ten opener against Wisconsin — Michigan State has dropped to 4-4 on the season. According to Jeff Borzello of ESPN, that is a historically bad start to the season for a team that entered the year as a preseason top-five team.
Check out Borzello’s “fun” stat about the Spartans’ brutal start to the season below:
Michigan State has now matched the worst 8-game start by an AP preseason top-5 team over the last 40 seasons, per @ESPNStatsInfo.
2003-04 Missouri, 2003-04 Michigan State and 1986-87 Louisville all started 4-4, which is the Spartans’ record after tonight’s loss to Wisconsin.

Michigan State will look to right the ship on Sunday and get back above .500 in a road game at Nebraska. After that, the Spartans will face another tough foe in top 10 Baylor at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit. So things could be getting even worse for Michigan State if they don’t figure it out quickly.
