MSP visits Motherwell school to mark 20th anniversary of Youth Music Initiative

Clare Adamson paid a visit to St Brendan’s Primary School in Motherwell to mark the 20th anniversary of the Youth Music Initiative.

The YMI is a Scottish Government music education programme, managed by Creative Scotland, with a vision to put music at the heart of children and young people’s lives and learning.

It currently operates with an annual budget of £9m and supports music activities in schools and informal settings across Scotland.

During her visit, the MSP for Motherwell and Wishaw said: “The YMI has had a huge impact over the past 20 years and it was wonderful to celebrate this anniversary at St Brendan’s.

“It was heart-warming to see the choir back in action after two years of pandemic disruption. These kids are exceptionally talented singers.

“We were treated to a wonderful melody including a sea shanty!

“I was convener of the education committee during its inquiry into music tuition in schools.

"We heard extensive evidence of the value of music to development, creativity, and confidence.

“In response to our work, the Scottish Government funded the removal of fees for children learning a musical instrument at school. Removing barriers to music is a hugely worthwhile endeavour.

“The YMI has reached over 270,000 young people and is currently supporting more than 300 Scottish based projects, creating nearly 1,000 jobs and over 3,400 professional development opportunities.

“My thanks to the staff at St Brendan’s, Creative Scotland, and most of all the pupils for their fabulous performance.”
