White bedding can be a blessing and a curse. The first few times you use it the bedding looks lovely and clean, but after a while it can gradually turn yellow due to sweat and body oils that are released during sleep.
It could also turn a funny colour due to mixing whites with other colours, or from using too much or too little detergent.
Fortunately, fans of the cleaning sensation Mrs Hinch have shared a clever 30p trick that will make your white bedding instantly sparkle again.
Ever since Sophie Hinchliffe went viral on Instagram in 2018 for sharing videos of herself cleaning her immaculate home, fans have come together to share their own best hacks.
Taking to the dedicated Facebook page Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips, one user asked: "What's your favourite whitening product? I have white bedding and want it to sparkle again."
Many savvy cleaners all recommended one product that costs under 30p that will help whiten, freshen and soften fabrics in the wash – white vinegar.
According to one Facebook user, you should "avoid" using softeners on your bedding, and instead just opt for white vinegar.
White vinegar can be picked up from any supermarket, but Tesco is currently selling distilled vinegar for 29p.
All you have to do is add a cap of white vinegar to the detergent door, or directly into the drum, and let it work its magic. You don't need to worry about any potential smell from the product, as that will be gone by the time the cycle has finished.
Another fan of the social media star said: "I use white vinegar to get rid of the grey hue in my husband's socks, it works instantly and it's my holy grail for brightening anything."
Explaining why this works, home improvement blogger Pulkit Damani told Homes and Gardens: "Vinegar is used for reducing fading because it is an acidic substance [pH about 2-3]. When applied to fabric, it helps to set the dye in the fabric, making it less likely to fade."
At the same time, white vinegar can be used as a substitute for fabric softener because "it is an acidic substance that can help break down the fibres in the fabrics. This makes the fabrics softer and less likely to wrinkle," he added.
Mrs Hinch herself has previously shared how she uses white vinegar to clean the actual washing machine. All she does is add a capful of white vinegar and a scoop of bicarbonate of sofa into the drum and put it on a quick spin cycle, leaving the inside sparkling.
