Mrs Brown's Boys star Brendan O'Carroll breaks silence after fury over his Tyler Perry comments

Mrs Brown's Boys star Brendan O'Carroll has said people should "lighten up" after comments he made caused fury earlier this week.

The comedian was called out online, following the comments he made regarding Tyler Perry 's 'colour' on The One Show.

Viewers who caught the quotes on BBC show have accused the Mrs Brown’s Boys star of making an 'incredibly racist remark' towards the American actor and director.

Appearing alongside the Don't Look Up star via video link on Tuesday night, Brendan, 66, was asked whether he could see Tyler, 52, ever appearing on his award-winning comedy creation.

Replying to hosts Lauren Laverne and Harry Judd, Brendan gestured to his own face and said: "So far we haven’t had anyone of his colour in there so I don't know if we could have him in.

"But you know what, I'd love that, but I think more importantly I'd love to do another movie with him."

Speaking after the fury, O'Carroll said people should "lighten up" and told the Sunday World: "It's very difficult to tell a gag without offending somebody.

"I was doing a radio interview once and this guy phoned in who happened to be gay, homosexual. He said that he found jokes about homosexuals offensive. I said 'it's very difficult to tell a joke about homosexuals or Irish people or English people without offending somebody'.

"I asked him 'you tell me a joke that you would find acceptable to homosexuals. He said 'two homosexuals mug a woman in a lane, one held her down and the other did her hair', which he found hilarious.

"I said 'holding a woman is not funny, number one and number two not all homosexuals are hairdressers and not all hairdressers are homosexual'."

Tyler Perry added to the same paper: "I think it is a very scary place if everybody wants censorship if they say something that somebody else doesn't agree with, or if they use a word that somebody else finds offensive."
