Mrs Brown’s Boys' Brendan O’Carroll slammed for ‘racist’ joke about Star Trek actor Tyler Perry

Mrs Brown’s Boys creator and actor Brendan O’Carroll has been accused of making a "racist" joke about Tyler Perry on BBC's The One Show

Irish-born Brendan, who records the hit telly show in Scotland, has a guest role in the Star Trek actor's new Netflix movie A Madea Homecoming.

Brendan's character Agnes Brown appears in the 12th instalment of the long-running film franchise, written and directed by Tyler.

As they talked about it, Brendan was asked whether he could see Don't Look up star Tyler ever appearing on his award-winning production Mrs Browns Boys.

Mrs Brown’s Boys’ Brendan O’Carroll made the 'racist' comment about Tyler Perry's 'colour' after appearing in his new movie (BBC)

As the 66-year-old replied to presenters Lauren Laverne and Harry Judd, he gestured to his face, saying: "So far we haven’t had anyone of his colour in there so I don't know if we could have him in.

"But you know what, I'd love that, but I think more importantly I'd love to do another movie with him."

Hollywood actor Tyler, 52, kept his cool and laughed off the comment but he did repeat it back to Brendan as he processed what was said.

Tyler questioned: "Nobody my colour?" as Brendan pointed to his face again.

Tyler then said: "Time to change the world. Diversity rules, here we go."

It made uncomfortable viewing for those at home and many went on social media to protest at Brendan's comment.

Others asked if it was going to be ignored or further action would be taken.

One viewer said: "Brendan Carol just made a racist remark on the one show and not one person called him out. Shame on you BBC #TheOneShow."

Someone else said: "Did Brendan O’Carroll just say Tyler a Perry couldn’t be in Mrs Brown’s Boys because he’s black on The One Show!?"

Another observed: "Brendan O'Carroll's attempt at being funny towards @tylerperry on BBC One Show tonight was quite embarrassing, I'm sure no malice was meant but that comment was wrong on so many levels," a third observed."
