Amazon Prime Video released all eight episodes of Mr. and Mrs. Smith on February 2nd, and fans of the show have been left with burning questions about the fates of John and Jane Smith, portrayed by Donald Glover and Maya Erskine respectively. Warning: Spoilers ahead for Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
In this reimagining of the 2005 action comedy film of the same name, the series introduces a few changes from the original storyline. While the movie featured a married couple who were unaware that they were both spies, the TV series starts with John and Jane as strangers. They are hired by a mysterious entity referred to as 'Hihi' to pose as a married couple and carry out a mission.
Over the course of eight thrilling episodes, the show evolves into an unconventional love story between the Smiths, blended with ample action and suspense. The Smiths face a barrage of challenges, from explosive encounters and knife fights to adrenaline-pumping chases. However, the finale leaves viewers with more questions than answers.
In the last episode of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, John and Jane find themselves hunting each other down in the streets of NYC, ordered by their boss Hihi to eliminate one another. As they seemingly come close to harming each other, tragedy strikes. Jane narrowly avoids being hit by bullets that come crashing through her window, but tragically, her beloved cat Max doesn't survive the attack. Simultaneously, John discovers a bomb planted in his mother's house.
A truth serum helps the couple regain their senses and reveal that they never actually intended to kill each other. But their relief is short-lived when the Other Smiths (played by Wagner Moura and Parker Posey) enter the scene. It becomes clear that the high-risk assignment mentioned in a previous episode was actually aimed at eliminating John and Jane, sparking an intense fight.
During the shootout, the Other John is fatally wounded while our John is shot in the stomach. Seeking refuge in a panic room, John's wound appears to be life-threatening, and Jane prepares to confront the Other Jane, who awaits outside the door to finish them off. In a tense moment, Jane reveals that she only has one bullet left, but in the final scene, we witness three gun flashes from the window. The fate of the Smiths hangs in the balance, with uncertainty surrounding whether they are alive or if they managed to eliminate the Other Jane.
While fans eagerly await news of a second season, Amazon Prime Video has yet to renew Mr. & Mrs. Smith. However, showrunner and co-creator Francesca Sloane has already expressed interest in a potential Season 2. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Sloane stated, 'Definitely... There are talks of season two and we have some really cool ideas for it.' She also mentioned collaborating with Donald Glover and Taofik Kolade, who previously worked on Atlanta, to bring fresh perspectives to the show.
If the series is renewed, we can expect to delve deeper into the plot of the next season and finally discover the fate of John and Jane. Alternatively, the show might introduce new actors to portray different Smith characters each season. Only time will tell.
For now, fans can enjoy the thrilling and action-packed first season of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Stay tuned for updates on a potential second season and the future of the Smiths' entangled lives.
