'Mr Consistent - a proper left-back' - introducing Matt Targett to Newcastle United fans

Newcastle United confirmed the signing of Matt Targett on deadline day with the left-back joining from Aston Villa on loan until the end of the season.

There's plenty of interest in Targett's move to Tyneside - just last season he was crowned the players' player of the season at Villa Park but within a short space of time, Villians' boss Steven Gerrard has come and removed as first-choice left-back.

Gerrard signed Lucas Digne from Everton - a player United also had an interest in - and the feeling from some is that Targett has 'bottled' the challenge laid down to him at Aston Villa.

The other side to that view is that Targett is not content with sitting on the bench - and has forced a move to a side in which first-team football is more of a guarantee.

Aston Villa writer Ashley Preece of Birmingham Live believes Newcastle have signed a player with a point to prove.

Ashley appeared on a special episode of The Everything is Black and White Podcast - Introducing Matt Targett.

Speaking to host Andrew Musgrove, he said of Targett: "It's a bit of shock [that he's gone] - a few weeks ago he was Villa's number one left-back and playing week-in and week-out but within the first few weeks of the transfer window, Steven Gerrard went and spent £25m on Lucas Digne.

"Targett suddenly sits out the last two games and then the next thing you know, he's off to Newcastle.

"It's a good career move for him - the excitement at Newcastle, he can be a big part of something there.

"You can't begrudge him the move.

"He'll go up to Newcastle with a point to prove and he'll want to prove Gerrard and Villa wrong - that they didn't need to spend all that money on Digne."

The pair discuss Targett's character and whether he'll bring some much-needed leadership to a Newcastle dressing room that is going to need all the fight it can get if it's to achieve safety.

There's also talk about Targett's fall from grace - a first-team regular with whispers of an England call-up to being dropped from the first team, replaced by a new left-back and allowed to leave on loan.

Plus Ashley and Andrew look at Targett's weaknesses and strengths and whether he can play a big role in keeping Newcastle up this season.
