With layers of coffee-dipper ladyfingers, whipped sweetened mascarpone cheese and a dusting of cocoa on top, it’s safe to say the classic tiramisu is one of our favourite desserts - and now it comes in liqueur form. Well, kind of.
Mr Black’s new COCONUTS! Rum and Coffee Liqueur is the love child of two Australian artisan distilleries: Mr Black and Bundaberg.
The liqueur blends Mr Black Coffee Liqueur with Bundaberg Small Batch Reserve Rum and, of course, coconuts.
“Our last three releases have been real spirits-nerd stuff. Lots of oak, barrel-ageing - serious nose-in-the-glass products,” Mr Black founder Tom Baker says. “This is the opposite, it’s tropical fun in a bottle. Chill it, sip it, mix it with coke, or shake up an espresso martini. It’s delicious no matter how you drink it.”
We decided to give it a taste test to see if it lives up to the hype and, spoiler alert, it does.
For me, as someone who A) now doesn’t drink much alcohol but subsited mostly on rum and cokes at university, and B) loves tiramisu, I found this liqueur was extremely drinkable and would be the perfect special drink to pull out at dinner parties.
I tried it straight with some ice and found the coffee and rum flavours were the real stars here, and the flavours intensified when left to ruminate for a second or two on the tongue.
While I couldn’t taste much coconut, I think the sweetness of this ingredient is what gives this liqueur its dessert-like flavouring. In short: it’s delicious and will give Aperol Spritz a run for its money as drink of the summer.

Coconut Espresso Martini recipe
Ingredients
- 30ml Mr Black Coconuts! Rum & Coffee Liqueur
- 30ml rum
- 30ml espresso
Method
Add all ingredients to a shaker with ice. Shake hard and strain into cocktail glass. Garnish with toasted coconut flakes or coffee beans.
