As well as gathering in unofficial fan zones across the city, 100 tickets were made available to refugees who have settled in Wales as a result of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. There were emotional scenes inside the ground as the game kicked off, with some shedding tears in the stands.
The respect was there in abundance for Ukraine - a country that had overcome immense adversity to be able to field a side in Cardiff. According to spectators at the stadium, the Wales football team went over to the Ukraine fans' side and clapped for them after the game as a demonstration of unification and support.
Videos and photos on social media have shown mutual respect expressed by both sets of fans outside the stadium. One fan that got to experience the capital's hospitality was Ukrainian London-based chef, Yurii Kovryzhenko and his friend.
The pair headed for Cardiff to watch their beloved team face Wales in the momentous play-off final. According to Mr Kovryshenko, he lost his friends during the day and headed into a pub.
In a previous interview with WalesOnline, he said: "In a moment we were invited to the table by the Welsh and we had a pint of beer with them.
"Impressions of Cardiff and the Welsh are extremely wonderful! This friendliness and solidarity helped me feel a little bit better after the morning news from Ukraine. I came to support the national team of Ukraine, their successes help the people of Ukraine emotionally. And in the same time the Welsh supported me."
