The biggest picture of all.
There are a number of preseason projection systems which take aim at identifying the teams most likely succeed ahead of a season, from Bill Connelly’s SP+ metric to Brian Fremeau’s FEI, but only one includes every single system out there to provide a snapshot of the season from week to week.
The Massey Composite includes 30 different rankings, not just SP+ and FEI but also Sagarin, ESPN’s Football Power Index, old BCS-related rankings like Billingsley, and many more. With so many different perspectives on the college football landscape, how does the Mountain West compare to the rest of the country?
- 34. Boise State
- 40. Air Force
- 50. Fresno State
- 51. San Diego State
- 61. Utah State
- 84. Nevada
- 92. Wyoming
- 97. San Jose State
- 106. Hawaii
- 107. Colorado State
- 117. UNLV
- 126. New Mexico
While the combined rankings may not contain too many surprises, that doesn’t mean there’s an overwhelming consensus. For instance, four different Mountain West teams — Boise State, Air Force, San Diego State, and Utah State — land in the top 25 of at least one ranking within the composite. Conversely, five other teams — Colorado State, Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico, and UNLV — project as a bottom-ten team somewhere.
