Motorway tragedy as man dies after being struck by car while walking on M8 near Chapelhall

A man has died after being hit by a car while walking on the M8 near Chapelhall.

Police were called to the motorway in the early hours of the morning after a pedestrian was struck by a car travelling on the westbound carriageway. Sadly, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers have identified the man and informed his family and next of kin.

Police have also confirmed an investigation into the collision is ongoing as they appeal for information including dashcam footage.

The driver of the Seat Leon car was thankfully uninjured but left very upset by the incident.

A Police Scotland appeal issued earlier this afternoon advised: "Officers are appealing for information following a fatal road crash on the M8 on Sunday, January 30.

"Around 1.50am, emergency services were alerted to an incident where a pedestrian, walking on the M8 carriageway, was struck by a blue Seat Leon car driving westbound on the motorway.

"The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Seat Leon was uninjured but was very upset following the incident.

"An investigation is under way to establish the full circumstances of the incident and the M8 was closed to allow crash scene investigators to conduct their enquiries."

Sergeant John Tait said: “We are aware there were other vehicles, in particular a HGV lorry, travelling on the carriageway around the time of the incident and I am asking the lorry driver and other motorists to contact us.

"They may not even be aware that an incident occurred but we would ask them to get in touch with us.

"In particular, I would ask anyone with dash cam devices to check their footage as it could hold images which could prove to be significant in our enquiries."

Anyone with information is asked to call Police Scotland via 101, quoting incident number 0449 of 30 January 2022.
