Motorway closed in both directions all day after milk tanker overturns

A major motorway has been closed in both directions after gallons of milk spilled onto the carriageway when a tanker crashed.

Police say the tanker ploughed through the central reservation of the M6 in Lancashire while travelling northbound at around 7am today (SUN).

It then crashed through into the southbound carriageway before overturning between junctions 31 and 32 near Preston.

The male driver and his female passenger were injured and have been taken to hospital, Lancashire Police said. Their condition is currently unknown.

Pictures from the scene show the tanker on its side with its roof crumpled and caved in.

The force the motorway, the longest in the UK, could be closed for most of the day after milk and diesel spilled across the carriageway.

Chief Inspector Patrick Worden said: "At this time we expect the motorway to be closed for some, if not most, of the day.

"The tanker needs to be recovered and due to the large scale milk and diesel spillage,
the motorway surface treated appropriately," he added.

"We expect this to cause significant delays and I would advise motorists to make plans for alternate routes."

Diversions have been put in place and motorists face hour-long delays on their journeys.
