Motorists could be fined £100 while driving after it's rained

There are many rules and restrictions drivers must adhere to while out and about on the roads.

The Highway Code lays out how motorists must conduct themselves, and failure to stick to the code can result in fines, penalty points on your licence and, in extreme cases, a driving ban or even a spell in prison. There is also the Road Traffic Act 1988, which sets out further rules.

Under section three of the Act, it is an offence to drive "without reasonable consideration for other persons", and this includes a number of offences.

One of these is any instance of "driving through a puddle causing pedestrians to be splashed". So while it might seem fairly harmless, soaking a pedestrian is actually illegal.

A likely penalty for this is a £100 fine and three penalty points - but if the act was found to be purposeful, then you could also be slapped with a public order offence, which is intended to penalise the use of violence or intimidation. If you don't pay the fine, you could also be taken to court.

It is therefore important to be aware of puddles, and any pedestrians in the vicinity.
