A motorist was rushed to hospital after a lorry burst into flames on a quiet Lanarkshire road.
Emergency services raced to the scene after the vehicle caught fire on Meadowfoot Road in Drumclog, near Strathaven, at roughly 3pm on Tuesday afternoon. One casualty was blue-lighted to hospital hospital for treatment, however their condition is unknown.
Two fire appliances were mobilised and the road was closed by police for several hours. Firefighters were eventually able to extinguish the blaze and secure the area, with the road fully reopened just before 8pm.
Video footage of the incident shows flames coming from the driver’s cab of the huge orange truck with grey smoke billowing into the air. The fire becomes more several and the clouds becoming darker and thicker.
A second clip taken shortly afterwards shows the lorry completly engulfed by the blaze. The fireball has consumed the entire length of the goods vehicle, with some of the truck’s panels seemingly melted away by the inferno.
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 3.06pm on Tuesday, June 7 to reports of a van on fire on Meadowfoot Road in Drumclog, Strathaven. Operations Control immediately mobilised two appliances to the scene and firefighters extinguished the fire.
“One casualty was passed into the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service and crews left the scene at 6.30pm after ensuring the area was made safe.”
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 3.30pm on Tuesday, 6 June, 2023, officers were called to assist SFRS with traffic management following a lorry fire on Meadowfoot Road, Drumclog. The road was cleared around 7.55pm.”
