Motherwell v Rangers: Steelmen can make life difficult for Gers and we'll enjoy spells without the ball, says Stuart Kettlewell

Stuart Kettlewell believes Motherwell can use the confidence from their four-game unbeaten run to make life difficult for Rangers in today's lunchtime clash.

And the Fir Park gaffer has told his side to "enjoy" periods of the game where they will see little of the ball.

The Steelmen are looking to end a run of 20 years without a top flight home win over the Gers, having last tasted success back in December 2002.

But February manager of the month Kettlewell's instant impact since taking the reins from Steven Hammell has sparked a rich vein of form, and three wins and a draw from his tenure so far has helped haul 'Well away from the bottom of the Premiership table.

So Kettlewell believes his side should go into the clash on a high.

He said: "When you sit as confident as we have been, you just look to the next game and try to make it five undefeated. That's as simple as we are making it.

"We know this is going to be a difficult period with the games we have coming up but when you are performing well and you are on a good run, you just look to keep building that momentum.

"I think if we try to muddy the waters by trying to make it too specific about how many points we need for certain games, that's when the whole plan can be derailed.

"The team you are playing against, the quality, the investment, the manager, the level of coaching - everything is top drawer, it's exceptional.

"But we have to believe in ourselves, believe that we can play on our home patch, be competitive and make life difficult for Rangers.

"It will be a massive test. The players know that themselves but it is one that whets the appetite.

"We shouldn't be going in with any apprehension."

Kettlewell accepts a different approach will be needed to try and tame Michael Beale's men, who are on a run of 13 games unbeaten and eight straight wins.

But he feels it's a challenge his side, sitting ninth in the table and nine points clear of bottom club Dundee United, should relish.

He added: "Potentially, what we have to choose from and the players that we have to select, I can see there being a slight change in approach.

“But it doesn’t mean we can’t be positive when we have possession of the ball.

“I always think when you play against the big two, there has to be a real mental toughness because you know at times they can have long periods on the ball.

“If you start to feel sorry for yourself and start to switch off, that’s when bad things can happen to you.

“That’s been a real clear message this week, to actually enjoy spells when you don’t have the ball because I think that can make you, one, difficult to play against, but also makes you maximise the opportunities you get when you’ve got the ball.”
