Motherwell's scrappy 1-0 win at Dundee United massive, says Steven Hammell amid Tony Watt VAR controversy

Mothewell boss Steven Hammell insists the points rather than the performamce was the most important thing as the Steelmen produced a "scrappy" win over 10 man Dundee United.

Former Fir Park striker Tony Watt was controversialy sent off for United five minutes before the break, following a VAR review for a challenge on Sean Goss.

And in the end, Sondre Solholm Johansen's 22nd minute header from Blair Spittal cross proved the difference as the Steelmen moved into the top six in the Premiership to end a run of four straight defeats.

Hammell told the club website: "I'm delighted about the end result. The message to the players all week has been how do we win this game?

"We can't be the team that plays well, has a lot of chances but ultimately come away with no points.

"It wasn't the perfect game but iuf it has to be a scrappy 1-0 we will take that.

"I want us to be better than that but today was about getting the three points and I'm delighted about that.

"The scrappy 1-0 games are massive in a season.

"I feel like the performance was secondary today. I didn't enjoy the second half but I felt comfortable, even although we weren't perfect.

"But I'd rather we did that than some of the previous performances when we've been excellent and come away with either a point or none.

"In comparison with the first game against United [a 0-0 draw] we played better, for sure, but the points is all that matters.

"I think we should have more points than we already do but we are in the top six and the fans who came along today really got behind us and made such a difference today."

Meanwhile, United boss Liam Fox wasn't convinced about the decision to send off Watt.

He told the BBC: "I need to be careful what I say. The footage the referee has seen, it looks like a red card.

"I've also seen other images and other footage that put a fair bit of doubt whether it actually is a red card.

"It's always difficult to talk about positives when you've not taken anything from the game.

"The second half, I was really pleased with. They were brave on the ball. If they give me that attitude and application all the time, we'll be okay."
