Motherwell boss hails "breathtaking" achievement for Kevin van Veen and reflects on his own fine run

Motherwell boss Stuart Kettlewell hailed Kevin van Veen's 11-game scoring run "breathtaking" after his striker broke the record for goals in consecutive games.

The Dutchman netted the opener in the Steelmen's 3-2 win over relegated Dundee United to break Mark Viduka's post-war record in the top flight and also smash Hugh Ferguson's 103-year club record in the process.

It took van Veen to 29 for the season and while Kettlewell admits his star man will be disappointed not to reach the 30-goal landmark, he says it a truly remarkable feat as he helped the Steelmen finish seventh in the Premiership.

Van Veen also finished runner-up in the Premiership scoring charts on 25 goals, just two shy of Celtic star Kyogo Furuhashi.

And Kettlewell, who also saw Blair Spittal and Max Johnston net for his side, said: "I have to pay testament to the run that Kevin is on.

"It is pretty breathtaking when you look at it.

"It is a tough division and a hard old league to play in, so to be chalking up the numbers he's got is great.

"I know he'll be disappointed he didn't get to that 30 mark, but if you are scoring 29 goals in this league, you are doing something right.

"You see his quality and composure when he gets into a position in the first half.

"I think we as a team could have scored more in the second half, with balls off the woodwork and offside decisions, but this type of game throws up numerous opportunities and I'm just glad of the opportunity at the end.

"Max Johnston comes off the bench and shows a brilliant attitude to get into the back post area.

"The quality is excellent."

Motherwell had to come from behind after a Jamie McGrath and a Steven Fletcher strike either side of the break had them trailing 2-1, before Blair Spittal rifled in a 69th minute equaliser and Max Johnston's 82nd minute header won the game.

The Steelmen were doing their all to help van Veen hit 30 goals and Sean Goss might have delivered the assist for that had he not overhit a pass in the box when the hitman would have had an easy finish.

But Kettlewell also praised van Veen for being selfless in pursuit of the three points.

He added: "It would have been very easy for him to try and go on solo runs, mazy runs, have efforts where he is cannoning it off defenders.

"But his awareness just shows a complete player.

"We've seen goalscorers make crazy decisions in the past when you are trying to hit these individual goals, but I think the most important thing for Kev and everybody was that we won the three points.

"I think you could see that with his decision making."

On the result itself, which saw Kettlewell finish the season with just two defeats, eight wins and four draws from 14 games at the helm, he said: "Looking at the first 45 minutes, I genuinely thought that we were off it and we did retreat a wee bit and stood off our opponents.

"That's not what has got us this record that we sit with just now.

"I spoke to the players at half-time and I thought they gave us a good reaction in the second half.

"We had that seventh place in our head and that's where we wanted to finish. It was important that we got those goals and I thought the quality of the goals was superb, and a nice way to cap off what has been a difficult season overall.

"But, certainly if I reflect on my spell, it has been a pretty remarkable run."

Not for the first time in Kettlewell's reign, VAR had a say in the match as Bevis Mugabi was penalised for handball and that got United level at 1-1.

But, once again, Kettlewell was left frustrated with the decision.

He said: "I've seen it back. It's a difficult one. His arm is outstretched and, personally, I thought it looks like it hits the top of his shoulder.

"I've not had it zoomed in but the angle I've seen looks that it is within that shirt sleeve - which I thought was okay - so you can understand why we become a bit irked about it.

"He knows nothing about the ball. I realise that isn't necessarily a defining factor in the decision, but just where the ball hits him is within that shirt sleeve.

"It doesn't look like a penalty to me."
