Motherwell 'battling St Mirren' for Tony Watt as striker could make shock Fir Park return

Motherwell are reportedly pursuing a deadline day swoop to bring Tony Watt back to Fir Park on loan from Dundee United - but they face competition from St Mirren for his signature.

It would be a hugely divisive move amongst the Fir Park faithful, who still have reservations over the 29-year-old's exit from the club to Tannadice last year.

In January 20222 the striker, who had signed a pre-contract agreement with the Tangerines, made a permanent move to Tayside and Watt's desire to leave Fir Park mid-season - having turned down a contract extension - didn't go down well with Steelmen supporters.

Watt was also the club's top scorer at the time of his departure.

But the Scottish Sun reports Watt is an option for Motherwell, with St Mirren boss Stephen Robinson - the former Fir Park gaffer - keen to get the Coatbridge man in with striker Jonah Ayunga set to be sidelined for months after picking up an injury in Saturday's 1-0 win over Motherwell in Paisley.

Meanwhile, Motherwell striker Connor Shields is said to be attracting interest from Championship leaders Queen's Park and Spiders boss Owen Coyle is weighing up a move to bring the Coatbridge man to the club on loan.
