A mother and daughter were assaulted in a dispute over a road traffic cone, it is claimed. Police have launched an investigation after the incident in Hulme, Manchester part of which was caught on film.
The 42-year-old mother drove her Mercedes car into Wilberforce Close, when she stopped to remove a cone which was in the middle of the street. She was then surrounded by a large group of people.
Her partner, who asked not to be named, alleges she and her daughter, 21, were attacked by a group of several teenagers and adults. He said: "She drove into the road and stopped to get out of the car to move the cone as it was in the middle of the road and she wanted to get past. She was driving home from work. She parked up and put the cone at the side of the road.
"She was then verbally abused, then assaulted by an adult, drinks were thrown at her car, and her mobile phone was damaged. They objected to her moving the cone. She suffered some kind of sprain to her leg." He said the situation escalated when he arrived a short time later in his car, also a Mercedes, in which his partner's daughter was a passenger.
"Her daughter got out to defend her mum and was punched in the face by a man and then dragged to the ground by her hair. She suffered a split lip. It happened at about 8.30pm on Monday."
The location of the incident was next to the Edwardian Hulme Hippodrome theatre, which fronts Chichester Road. The mother's partner claimed that about four police officers attended the scene, but alleged that they failed to arrest the main culprits and has made a formal complaint to GMP.
The alleged assault on the daughter was caught on dash-cam footage. She is seen to be confronted as soon as she steps from the car and then grabbed and pulled to the ground. Both mother and daughter attended Manchester Royal Infirmary for treatment.
Greater Manchester Police said in a statement: “Just after 8pm on Monday 20 th June, police were called with a report that a woman and her adult daughter had been approached by an unknown group of people on Wilberforce Close, Hulme.
"It has been reported that the group then assaulted the victims leaving them needing hospital treatment – they have since been discharged.
"On Monday evening, officers attended the home address of a suspect in order to make an arrest – the suspect was not present and so officers have since requested that the suspect attend a voluntary police interview.
"GMPs City of Manchester district are investigating the incident and enquiries are ongoing."
