The trickle-down creepy-costumed extravagance for Halloween has reached us from the heights of stardom, with many celebs setting the example.
Iconic imitations, from Gigi Hadid as Sandy from Grease to Sophie Turner, Joe Jonas, and Olivia DeJonge as Lizzie McGuire Movie characters, to Lizzo as Baby Yoda (do it better, no-one could) have become inspirations.
But to set the trends, you have to be ahead of them. So what are the top Halloween costumes from TV and movies this year?
According to Slingo, an analysis of the top Google trends for cinematic ensembles this year shows that one of Netflix’s biggest shows, Squid Game, takes the top spot, with 797,800 searches.
Netflix subscribers watched more than 2.1 billion hours of the award-winning show that shot its actors to global stardom. The gory, horrific tale makes the perfect costume to stay in the know – and in the dark.
According to Variety, searches for white Vans also rose by 7,800 per cent since the show aired.
Harley Quinn took second place as most-popular outfit, refusing to let go of its stronghold on women for years now – and with the wholesome revamp to the Birds of Prey costuming thanks to designer Erin Benach, the trend might be here to stay.
Margot Robbie also inspired another outfit, with the classic and non-scary Barbie joining the top searches this year at 47,900 searches. Valentino pink leading the Barbiecore trend means that this monochrome outfit may be the easiest to piece together.
On the greyer side of villainy, Scarlet Witch’s maroon-red leather get-up takes ninth place, with 69,900 searches. And even more heroes, like an all-black Batman in third place (132,000) and an all-white Moon Knight in 15th place (33,200), show that monochrome costumes are all the rage.
Some funnier takes on silver-screen remakes are vampire costumes from the (deadly serious) Twilight renaissance which take fifth place (102,080), and Minions-inspired suits, from the 2022 film that set the box office opening record that was (ironically) wildly popular with teens.
