Most dangerous roads and junctions in one part of Merseyside

The most dangerous roads and junctions in one part of Merseyside have been revealed, with one seeing two people die just weeks before Christmas.

Sefton Council revealed the list as it decided on which areas of the borough were to receive new pedestrian crossings, with the local authority ranking the 27 worst roads for safety. The list ranked which roads are the priority in the pedestrian crossing review, with factors such as the percentage of elderly pedestrians, unaccompanied children, prams/pushchairs/wheelchairs, road width and the number of pedestrian collisions in the last three years all affecting the rankings.

The three worst roads and junctions in Sefton were listed as Crosby Road South/Cambridge Road in Waterloo, Liverpool Road North/Southport Road in Maghull and The Northern Road in Crosby. One road that was listed a number of times was Lulworth Road in Southport.

The main road that runs from Lord Street through Birkdale was the site of two pedestrian deaths last year, with Grace Foulds and Marie Cunningham both being involved in a fatal crash on November 30. Since then a petition was organised in a bid to get a pedestrian crossing installed on the road.

The list of roads was created following the announcement that £100,000 would be used to carry out work on new crossing facilities in the borough, although only the top three on the list qualify for the crossings, meaning Lulworth Road will miss out on a new pedestrian crossing, despite four locations on the road being highlighted in the report and the families of Grace and Marie campaigning for increased safety measures.

In his report, Sefton Council Head of Highways & Public Protection Peter Moore wrote: "As in previous years, officers have used the approved methodology in determining proposed pedestrian crossing priority list of new sites. This is a nationally accepted method of assessing requests for new pedestrian crossing facilities based upon the pedestrian/vehicle conflict occurring at each location utilising the formula - PV², where P is the number of pedestrians crossing, and V is the volume of traffic present over an hourly period.

"The hourly figures used are based on the average of the four busiest hours for the site."

Using advice from the Department for Transport, it was deemed that only Crosby Road South/Cambridge Road, Liverpool Road North/Southport Road and The Northern Road were above the threshold for new pedestrian crossings.

The 27 roads and junctions listed in the report are:
