Most beautiful scenic drives in Britain revealed - see full list of journeys

A picturesque 30-mile road route in the Lake District has been named Britain’s most beautiful drive.

Glorious views on the journey from Kendal to Keswick helped it top the poll of around 2,000 drivers.

The hour long ride on the A591 in Cumbria takes in the Lakeland fells and the banks of Windermere.

And it pipped trips from Loch Lomond to Glencoe in Scotland and along Coastal Way in west Wales.

Other favourites included the Snake Pass in the Pennines, the winding road through Cheddar Gorge in Somerset and the journey around the New Forest, Hants.

The Llanberis Pass in Snowdonia, north Wales, the Causeway Coastal route in Northern Ireland, which provided the backdrop for Games of Thrones, and the rugged scenery from Cambridge to Hunstanton Cliffs in Norfolk, also featured.

Three quarters of those surveyed agreed that the UK is home to beautiful driving routes and two thirds said the car is one of the best ways to explore the country, with more than half preferring to take a scenic journey to their destination rather than a motorway.

Car rental firm Drivalia, which commissioned the study of 2,000 drivers, said: “The UK is an amazing place to travel with so many beautiful driving routes on our doorstep.

“From the amazing rugged beauty of Scotland, the outstanding vistas of Wales, iconic backdrops in Northern Ireland and the wonderful journeys that stretch across the rolling scenery of England, the research shows that there are an abundance of beautiful places to stop, take a breath and enjoy the wonderful peace when driving around the country.”

As a nation half (48%) are planning to take a road trip for Christmas this year, with the average Brit jumping in the car at least twice throughout the festive period.
