Mortons Rolls back in production - first look inside

The famous Mortons Rolls factory is back in production - and here’s a first look at a sight morning roll fans thought they might not see again.

The Glasgow bakery restarted production on Saturday after a rescue deal for the famous business was agreed on Friday.

On Saturday a small number of staff returned to the bakery to restart the ovens and make test bakes before the factory opened in full on Sunday - and our sister paper the Sunday Mail got an exclusive sneak preview.

The bakery restarted production with some 110 staff after a consortium of Glasgow business people – PVL – took ownership and control of the firm’s assets after negotiations with HMRC, administrators and the Scottish Government.

Mortons’ collapse was blamed on the pandemic, rise in energy prices and contractual obligations to supermarkets.

Its new owners are now seeking support from the Scottish Government and other agencies and hope to increase the workforce back to 250.

PVL’s representative John McIlvogue told the Sunday Mail the new owner hopes to restore production to its previous level of 250,000 rolls a day, with the group focusing on supplying small shops.

He said: “If we can get the support that has been promised from the First Minister then we can get the 250 back plus more. It’s all about looking after the people who work here.

“Not only has Mortons Rolls got this iconic brand it also has the customers – the last two weeks has shown that.

“We also think our product is head and shoulders above anything that is out there.

“Our aim is to get back to basics and give the public what they want – a fresh crispy roll in the morning.”

McIlvogue declined to name the investors in PVL but called them “serious Glasgow business people.”
