Morrisons third cheapest supermarket behind Lidl and Aldi after weekly shop comparison

A supermarket chain that was previously found to be the most expensive has become the third cheapest in a weekly comparison. Amid price increases, Manchester Evening News have been monitoring the prices of the same eight essential items at the main six supermarkets every week.

Time after time Morrisons has been deemed as the most expensive, but in recent weeks it has been climbing back up the chart and has become the third cheapest shop for this week's round, with Asda falling to the bottom spot. Lidl remains in the top spot, with Aldi closely behind.

The bill for both Tesco (£11.91) and Sainsbury's (£11.87) is also now more than the retailer's £11.77 after the latter raised the price of mince from £1.99 to £2.19 as part of its Aldi Price Match. As well as the 500g pack of mince, the comparison also looks at the prices of a two-pint bottle of milk, a loaf of bread, a pack of chicken breasts, tea bags, coffee, beans and butter.

Lidl has also increased its mince to £2.19, but is still working out cheapest overall, at £11.58 for the shopping. Aldi is only 2p more expensive at £11.60, after putting the price of its cheapest coffee up from £1.85 to £1.89.

As the cost of living crisis continued and products continue to rise in price, shoppers have been warned that the increases are not stopping any time soon. Grocery inflation continued to climb during February, reaching a new record high of 17.1%.

Kantar Worldpanel reported that the increase over the past 12 months has added around £811 to annual household shopping bills. Fraser McKevitt, head of retail and consumer insight at Kantar, said: “Our latest research shows that grocery price inflation is the second most important financial issue for the public behind energy costs, with two thirds of people concerned by food and drink prices, above public sector strikes and climate change.

“One quarter say they’re struggling financially, versus one in five this time last year. The numbers speak for themselves.” Here is the full list of products and how much they cost from the supermarkets for the comparison.
