Morrisons shoppers accuse supermarket of ‘ripping people off’ with £9 jar of coffee

A Morrisons shopper got a shock at the checkout recently after being charged £9 for a jar of coffee.

The customer went into her local Morrisons to buy a 190g jar of Nescafe Gold Alta Rica, but quickly asked for a refund after she was told of the hefty price tag. She took to Facebook to share the news, urging members of the Extreme Couponing and Bargains group to shop elsewhere for the coffee, the Manchester Evening News reports .

“Popped into Morrisons yesterday to pick some coffee up (Alta Rica) got to the till and it scanned at £9.00,” the shopper explained. “I obviously queried it and they said it was correct!”

The customer said that she “got a refund and went to Home Bargains” after finding out how much the coffee cost. She added: “Just sharing in case anybody else buys it as part of a big shop, I don't always check.”

Indeed, the Morrisons website is currently listing a 190g jar of the premium coffee at £9. Other supermarkets including Asda and Waitrose currently have it priced at £5.50, while Tesco has given it a £6.50 price tag.

Many shoppers were quick to air their complaints about Morrisons’ rising prices in response to the original post. “This doesn’t surprise me,” one person said. “I used to shop at Morrisons all the time but their price increases are just ridiculous.”

“Morrisons have been ripping people clean off for the last 10 months that I've noticed,” another former customer wrote. “Added an extra £2-4 on average to each item. I've vowed never to step foot in there again.”

A third added: “Morrisons are going way over the top with their price increases. I've given up shopping there unless it's an absolute necessity that I can't get elsewhere.”

Although the supermarket has left some shoppers unhappy with its recent price hikes, Morrisons is also setting out to do its part to help those most in need. It has paired up with Heinz for a new initiative called Ask for Henry , which aims to provide more than 160,000 free meals this winter.

The scheme encourages people to “Ask for Henry” at any of Morrisons’ 397 cafes nationwide to receive a free jacket potato with Heinz Beanz, no questions asked. Jojo De Noronha, President Northern Europe at Heinz, said: “Whilst we know it doesn’t fix the problem, we hope our ‘Ask for Henry’ initiative can be of some help at this difficult time for many, particularly over half term.”
