Morrisons overtakes Tesco as 'priciest supermarket' as shoppers left 'shocked' at price hikes

Morrisons has found itself reclaiming its title as the "most expensive" supermarket for groceries - just a week after it was overtaken by Tesco.

Since June 2022, The Manchester Evening News has been comparing the cost of basic items at six major UK supermarket chains, with Morrisons named the most expensive option for the last six months.

The only time that the supermarket chain has not been named as the priciest option was last week, which saw Tesco take the title after Morrisons reduced the cost of two products.

However, the latest weekly comparison has found that Morrisons is once again the dearest supermarket, after it became the only supermarket to rise the cost off one of its products this week.

It was found that a 300g pack of chicken increased by 10p to £2.59 from £2.49 - which is the highest price that you would pay at any of the other supermarkets.

The overall bill for Morrisons came to a total of £11.57, which is 7p more expensive than Tesco which slid to second place this week to a total of £11.50.

One shopper who has noticed the price rises took to a budgeting Facebook group after spotting a 550g tub of Bisto reduced salt gravy granules for £5.49 wrote: "Went to Morrisons this morning totally shocked at the price."

"I stopped going to Morrisons ages ago. The prices are ridiculous", agreed a second.

A Morrisons spokesperson said: "We are working hard to keep prices down and competitive for our customers while maintaining high standards and availability in all our stores.

"Since December we have invested over £16 million to cut the prices on over 50 per cent of our entry level products to help customers' money go further particularly during the January squeeze."
