Morrisons will be hiring thousands of temporary staff over the Christmas period, with vacancies currently available in Manchester and the surrounding areas. The supermarket giant says it is looking to recruit 3,500 people across the UK in the run-up to Christmas this year.
The retail chain said the festive period is set to be “even bigger” than normal “with the added excitement of a Winter World Cup”. The supermarket will be hiring 500 more new recruits than last year in preparation.
Roles will be available in Morrisons stores as well as in their food-making and logistics operations. According to the Morrisons jobs website, there are more than 60 current vacancies within a 20-mile radius of Manchester.

Clare Grainger, Morrisons’ people director, said: “Ahead of the festive season, we are looking for 3,500 Christmas helpers to come and join our fast-moving and exciting team on a temporary or permanent basis. There are lots of great opportunities in our various stores and sites across the UK to help people develop new skills and make and deliver the items our customers love to enjoy when celebrating the festive season.”
Morrisons follows in the footsteps of Tesco, which announced last week that it would be hiring thousands of workers this Christmas. Tesco is looking for 15,000 temporary staff to cover shifts in supermarkets and Extra stores over the winter. Tesco people director Rachel Bushby said: “We know times are tough out there at the moment, so this is a good opportunity for anyone looking to boost their income over the festive period or who needs to find a stepping stone back into the world of work."
The recruitment drive comes as Morrisons closes in on a £190 million takeover of McColl’s, the convenience store chain. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has confirmed that an offer from the retail group to sell 28 stores would be accepted.
The CMA had raised concerns over 35 locations where the close proximity of Morrisons and McColl’s stores created competition worries but indicated the store sale plan will allay these concerns.
David Potts, Morrisons’ chief executive, said: “I am pleased that the acquisition of McColl’s has cleared the final regulatory hurdle. McColl’s is a business with great potential and over the last few months we have been making plans for its integration into Morrisons, for investment and for growth. We will be outlining these plans shortly.”
