Morrisons issues apology as angry shopper's picture goes viral

Supermarket giant, Morrisons has issued an apology after a picture of empty shelves in one of its stores went viral. Morrisons is the fourth largest supermarket chain in the UK.

Posting on social media, a customer of the supermarket in Hull shared pictures of empty shelves. Shortages were reported to have been seen in the meat and poultry aisle, and there were also shortages of lettuce.

Morrisons has apologised to customers for the shortages over the weekend. It blamed supply issues for running out of lettuce, caused by "low availability".

One disgruntled customer affected by the shortages at Morrisons told Hull Live: "You'd expect the big supermarkets to have this sort of stuff in stock. It's worrying that they can't even get the basics like salad and chicken in.

"It's not the end of the world but when you're turning to frozen and tinned items instead it really says something about where we're going. Whatever the issue is it needs sorting."

A customer information notice in Holderness Road store revealed the reason for the shortage of lettuce. "Due to disruptions within our supply chain, we are seeing low availability on lettuce," it read. "Apologies for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your understanding."

A number of factors have raised fears of supermarket shortages, including the war in Ukraine and flooding in Spain. Other supermarket have reported shortages. Co-op recently confirmed the chain's own difficulties in sourcing supplies of lettuce, vegetable oil and rapeseed oil, while others have started rationing certain items. Last month the government reassured the public that action was being taken to reduce the impact on food supply chains. Hull Live has contacted Morrisons for further comment.
