Morrisons has issued an apology to anyone who shops in its supermarkets after an image of empty shelves in one of its stores went viral online.
One shopper shared pictures of empty shelves in their local Morrisons supermarket in Hull on social media, when they arrived to find empty shelves on the weekend.
Morrisons was suffering shortages on some of its most popular products - including meat, poultry and lettuce.
A disgruntled customer affected by the shortages told Hull Live : "You'd expect the big supermarkets to have this sort of stuff in stock. It's worrying that they can't even get the basics like salad and chicken in.
“It's not the end of the world but when you're turning to frozen and tinned items instead it really says something about where we're going. Whatever the issue is, it needs sorting."
Customer information notices were placed around the affected store in Hull, which said: "Due to disruptions within our supply chain, we are seeing low availability on lettuce.
“Apologies for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your understanding."
And Morrisons spokesperson said: "Due to the unprecedented weather in Spain, we have faced some availability issues and are working hard to mitigate the disruption.
"UK lettuces will also be coming on sale in the coming weeks which will help the situation," they added.
The Ukraine war and a number of other crises, including flooding in Spain, have raised fears of food shortages.
Last month the government reassured the public that action was being taken to reduce the impact on food supply chains caused by the Ukraine crisis.
The country was one of the largest exporters of wheat to the world prior to the conflict. Co-op's boss also commented on the chain's difficulties in sourcing lettuce, as well as vegetable oil and rapeseed oil.
Supplies of olive oil, sunflower oil and rapeseed oil have been affected by the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine - both of which are key suppliers of these oils.
As a result, UK supermarkets like Tesco, Morrisons, Waitrose and Iceland have all enforced limits on the amount of cooking oil that shoppers can purchase.
While oil shortages were due to the Ukraine war, recent floods in Spain have been blamed for the reduced lettuce supplies.
Last month, The Grocer magazine warned Spanish strikes were increasing pressure on supplies of fruit, veg and salad.
Spain is a key supplier of fresh produce to the UK but has suffered a spate of bad weather and transportation issues.
