Yacht rescue | A rescue mission has been launched to save two people onboard a yacht in distress on the NSW south coast. Wild weather across much of south-east Australia caused disruption to flights, damage to property and left thousands without power.
Visa jump | The number of Palestinians applying onshore for protection has continued to grow, rising from 119 in May to 157 in June and 176 in July. The official statistics will increase pressure on the federal government over its decision to require them to come to Australia on visitor visas first.

Biden blast | Benjamin Netanyahu is not doing enough to secure a ceasefire deal with Hamas, Joe Biden said, as protests against the Israeli leader’s government suffered a blow when a court ordered an early end to a general strike. The UK has suspended 30 arms export licences to Israel after a review by the new Labour government. But Netanyahu defied criticism in a combative press conference.
God on his side? | Donald Trump told a Fox News host that God believes he will “straighten out” the country after he survived an assassination attempt in July. Trump was ridiculed for claiming that Kamala Harris had mistreated his former vice-president, Mike Pence.
Germany turmoil | Leaders of the far-right Alternative für Deutschland have demanded that their party be included in coalition negotiations in two states where it won nearly a third of the vote in elections on Sunday. The results have scrambled the political landscape a year before a general election with a strong showing by the leftist, anti-immigrant Sahra Wagenknecht Allianz also contributing to the realignment.
France shocked | A husband who allegedly drugged his wife and invited more than 80 strangers to rape her at their home for almost a decade has gone on trial in a case that has shocked France.
Euthanasia ‘right’ | The acclaimed Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar has called for euthanasia to be legalised worldwide as he launches his new movie tackling the subject at the Venice film festival.
