Moringa Supplement Salmonella Outbreak Expands to 119 Cases Across 36 States, Officials Warn

A Salmonella outbreak linked to moringa leaf powder supplements was declared over in March 2026. It is no longer over.

Federal investigators reopened the multistate investigation in May after 22 new illnesses emerged. As of May 27, 2026, the CDC and FDA have confirmed 119 people infected across 36 states, with 32 hospitalizations and no deaths. The true case count is likely much higher — the CDC estimates that for every confirmed Salmonella case, approximately 29 go undetected.

And a separate, parallel investigation has linked MOGO-brand moringa capsules to an additional 18 illnesses across 14 states.

If you are currently taking any moringa supplement, this article applies to you directly.

Why This Matters

Moringa leaf powder has surged in popularity as a supplement ingredient — marketed for immune support, anti-inflammatory benefits, and energy. It appears in green superfood powder blends, standalone capsules, and combination products sold on Amazon, at nutrition specialty stores, and through direct-to-consumer websites.

What most buyers do not know: dietary supplements do not require pre-market safety approval from the FDA. Ingredients can contaminate or harbor pathogens during cultivation, drying, or processing, and those products can reach consumers without any pre-sale safety testing.

Salmonella is extremely well-adapted to survive in dry, low-moisture environments, which includes powdered supplements. Food Safety News reports that the supplement industry's standard testing protocols have not been sufficient to prevent repeated moringa-linked outbreaks in 2026.

What We Know So Far

According to the CDC's outbreak investigation page, the investigation links two Salmonella strains — Typhimurium and Newport — to imported moringa leaf powder used as an ingredient in multiple supplement brands.

Of 79 patients interviewed, 70 (approximately 89 percent) reported consuming a product containing moringa leaf powder. The dominant exposure was Live it Up Super Greens powder, 60 of the 79 interviewed patients. Five reported Why Not Natural Pure Organic Moringa capsules, four reported TNVitamins moringa capsules, and one reported consuming both Live it Up and Why Not Natural.

Illness onset dates range from August 22, 2025, to April 26, 2026 — a span of more than eight months. One sample in this outbreak predicted resistance to ampicillin. A related, separate MOGO Moringa investigation found some cases linked to an extensively drug-resistant strain, according to the Washington State Department of Health.

These products are shelf-stable and have long expiration dates. They may still be in consumers' homes even if purchased months ago.

Where the Risk Is Highest

According to the CDC, cases have been confirmed in all 36 states across every major region of the country, including Alaska. The supplement products were sold nationally through the companies' own websites and through major online retailers, including Amazon. The CDC notes that the true number of sick people is likely much higher than confirmed cases.

The Washington State Department of Health has flagged that some cases in the MOGO Moringa parallel investigation are linked to an extensively drug-resistant Salmonella strain that does not respond to standard first-line antibiotics. This is a significant concern for patients who develop severe illness.

What Doctors and Experts Say

The FDA's traceback investigation revealed a common manufacturer between Live it Up Super Greens and Why Not Natural Pure Organic Moringa capsules — a finding that suggests contaminated imported moringa leaf powder reached multiple finished products through a shared supply chain.

As the FDA notes on its investigation page, it is working with firms to determine the root cause of the contamination and whether additional products may be affected. The investigation remains ongoing, and the recall may continue to expand.

Physicians and public health experts have repeatedly noted that the supplement industry's lack of pre-market safety testing requirements creates conditions where contaminated products can reach a large number of consumers before any illness cluster is detected.

Who Faces the Greatest Risk?

Salmonella illness is more likely to become severe in:

  • Children under five years old
  • Adults 65 and older
  • Pregnant women, whose infections can harm the fetus
  • Immunocompromised individuals, including those undergoing cancer treatment, organ transplant recipients, or people taking immunosuppressive medications

People with the drug-resistant strain identified in the MOGO investigation face a harder-to-treat illness and may not respond to standard antibiotic choices.

Symptoms and Warning Signs to Watch For

Salmonella illness typically begins six hours to six days after consuming contaminated food or supplements. Symptoms include:

  • Diarrhea, often watery and frequent
  • Fever
  • Abdominal cramps and nausea
  • Vomiting in some cases

Most healthy adults recover within four to seven days. However, severe illness requiring hospitalization is more likely when the infected person is in a high-risk group.

Seek medical care if symptoms include bloody stool, fever above 102°F, severe dehydration, or diarrhea lasting more than five days. If you are in a high-risk group and develop any Salmonella symptoms after consuming moringa supplements, contact a clinician promptly.

What You Can Do Now

  • Stop taking any recalled moringa supplement immediately. Discard the product — do not try to "use it up" on the grounds that you feel well now.
  • Check all recalled products against your current supplement cabinet, including products you may have recently ordered online.
  • Clean any surfaces, containers, scoops, shakers, or blender jars that may have been used with recalled products, using hot soapy water or a dishwasher.
  • If you have developed diarrhea, fever, or cramping after taking a moringa supplement, contact your health care provider and mention the supplement use specifically — Salmonella testing requires a deliberate clinical order.
  • Report adverse reactions or illness concerns to the FDA's MedWatch Safety Reporting Portal .
  • Monitor the FDA's outbreak investigation page for updated recall information, as new lots are being added.

Cost and Access: What Patients Should Know

Consumers who purchased recalled moringa products can contact the respective companies for refund information. Salmonella illness diagnosis requires a stool culture or lab test ordered by a clinician — it is covered by most health insurance plans. For uninsured patients, community health centers and urgent care clinics can evaluate and treat Salmonella illness at reduced or no cost.

What Happens Next

The FDA's investigation is ongoing, and the recall may continue to expand. New lots were added as recently as June 11, 2026. The traceback investigation into the contaminated imported moringa leaf powder ingredient is underway, but has not yet identified the specific source. MedicalDaily will report on new recalls, case count updates, and investigation findings as they are released.

The Bottom Line

A Salmonella outbreak linked to moringa supplements was declared over — then 22 new cases reopened it. With 119 confirmed illnesses across 36 states and recalls spanning multiple brands sold through Amazon and specialty retailers, anyone who currently takes a moringa supplement should verify their product against the FDA's recall list right now. Products with expiration dates through 2028 may still be in your home. Discard recalled products and monitor for symptoms.
