Anger among Labour MPs over Sir Keir Starmer’s handling of the Peter Mandelson scandal has raised questions over his political future but the role of his trusted chief of staff in the saga is also under intense scrutiny.

Morgan McSweeney, seen as an ally of the disgraced peer, is considered the driving force behind his appointment as US ambassador despite knowing that his dealings with paedophile Jeffrey Epstein continued after the financier’s conviction for child sex offences.
