More woe for holidaymakers as major airline announces Glasgow flight cancellations

Travellers’ Summer getaway plans have been struck another blow as more flights to and from Glasgow Airport have been cancelled.

Major airline Flybe have announced that they will be cancelling flights departing from Belfast City Airport to Glasgow due to aircraft supply issues. Birmingham to Glasgow will also be affected.

Bookings affected are those that fall between July 28 and October 29. The airline has published a full list of the cancelled flights on its website.

Flybe CEO Dave Pflieger said that the decision to cancel flights had “not been taken lightly”, citing issues around securing enough aeroplanes for their enhanced Summer timetable.

They had planned to expand their timetable to accommodate new routes and times. However, they were not able to secure enough aircraft in time.

As a result, flights from Belfast City to Aberdeen, Inverness and Newcastle and from Birmingham to Aberdeen have been scrapped completely.

He said: “The two aircraft leasing companies who were contracted to provide our additional aeroplanes have now told us that they will be unable to fulfil their commitments until after the summer.

“We were able to find and rent aircraft from two separate airlines in Greece and Spain, but those planes are not enough, and the lack of additional aircraft needed for new flying means we need to adjust our future flight schedule.

“As a result, today we are reducing our planned increase in flying for the period of 28 July until 29 October. This new schedule will be fully supported by the aircraft we do have available, and we will still introduce more flights later this year -- after we receive our delayed aircraft.”

He said that the company will continue to try and source the extra planes needed to avoid the disruption, but that the company was announcing the cancellations now to give customers enough time to alter their travel plans.

“This is not a decision that I have taken lightly, and as you would expect we are in daily conversations with all involved to see if anything might change that would allow us to resume our original plans at an earlier date.” He added.

Continuing: “That said, given the current facts, I believe it is essential that we take action now to ensure you have enough time to change your travel plans, be reaccommodated on a different flight or, if that is not desired, obtain a full refund.”

Customers affected by the cancellations can rearrange their flights via the Flybe website or contact the support team.
