More travel chaos for Brits as another 900 flights cancelled in Europe for summer

Holidaymakers will need to steel themselves for more travel chaos this summer as another airline has announced that it is cancelling hundreds of flights.

Lufthansa is joining the likes of easyJet, British Airways and TUI and announcing cancellations.

The travel firm will be scrapping 900 flights from its schedule, kicking off next month. Affected flights will predominantly be on Fridays and weekends to a number of European destinations, from Frankfurt and Munich as reported by the Daily Star.

The airline stated: “After a good two years of the pandemic, Lufthansa group airlines report high demand for air travel this summer."

It continued: “At present, however, the infrastructure has not yet been fully restored. The entire aviation industry, especially in Europe, is currently suffering from bottlenecks and staff shortages. This affects airports, ground handling services, air traffic control, and also airlines.”

When an airline cancels your flight, you are entitled to a refund. You may be offered alternatives such as rebooking or vouchers, which you can of course choose, but if you want the refund you are entitled to it.

While Lufthansa's cancellations are predominantly from German airports, in the UK Brits have already been hit with plenty of travel chaos as airports and airlines struggle for a host of reasons, including staff shortages and a surge of demand.

Speaking to the Mirror, one BA pilot has warned of potential staff exodus and further delays that could last through to winter.

When talking about ongoing staff shortages in the industry they predicted: "We might be correctly crewed by winter time. There is no chance this will be sorted this summer. The last month (August) might be okay."

When asked whether they would advise people to book summer holidays, they answered: "If you're looking at going on an easyJet from Gatwick in the school holidays in Alicante, probably not.

"Maybe midweek out of the school holidays, at a low demand time, yeah go for it."
