More thunderstorms to hit North East as Met Office issues second consecutive yellow weather warning

A second consecutive warning has been issued for heavy showers and thunderstorms across the North East on Thursday morning.

The Met Office has released another yellow weather warning for parts of the North East - running between 11.30am and 7pm on Thursday. Experts say that the storms are likely to cause travel disruption and flooding in some areas.

Rounding up what to expect, experts said that there is a chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus - while delays to train services are also possible.

The warning covers County Durham, Darlington and Northumberland.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: "Heavy showers will develop quite widely later this morning and afternoon, hail and lightning accompanying showers in some places. Some of these showers will be slow-moving and 10 to 20 mm of rain is likely to fall in less than an hour in some places whilst a few spots could see as much as 20 to 50 mm of rain in 2 or 3 hours."

Here's the five-day Met Office weather forecast for the North East.

Thursday:

Early mist patches soon clearing with cloud breaking giving some sunshine. Showers bubbling up during the morning, these occasionally heavy, slow moving and perhaps thundery, with a risk of hail. Temperatures around average. Maximum temperature 18°C.

Friday:

Generally cloudy on Friday morning with thick cloud and spots of drizzle. Some limited brightness may develop in the north later. Cool under cloud but warm in sunshine. Maximum temperature 13°C.

Saturday to Monday:

Saturday mostly dry after a cloudy start. Fine and dry for Sunday morning, but cloud and rain developing later. Wet and windy on Monday. Cool in the cloud and rain.
