In Afghanistan, men, women and children are increasingly in dire straits: turning to begging, offering up their young daughters in marriage and even selling a kidney in order to be able to put food on the table. With most international aid cut off since the Taliban came back to power, some 23 million people – more than half the population – are facing famine. Meanwhile, French energy giant Total – now known as TotalEnergies – and its American partner Chevron have announced that they are pulling out of Myanmar. For months, human rights groups have been putting pressure on multinationals to withdraw. TotalEnergies said civil rights abuses by the ruling junta led the company to call it quits.
Finally, the Indonesia capital Jakarta is sinking. Home to more than 10 million people, it's a victim of climate change and congestion. In 2019, the government promised to move the capital to Kalimantan, in the Indonesian part of Borneo, but the plans were postponed because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
