MUMBAI: With the start of summer season, Western Railway (WR) has stepped up vigil in AC services to weed out unauthorised passengers from entering these trains. In the month of April alone, a total of 6,353 passengers were caught traveling without proper ticket.
This is almost 260 percent increase compared to April 2022 when 1754 people were caught.
WR’s chief public relations officer Sumit Thakur said, The earnings from this unauthorised passengers was Rs 21.34 lakhs in April 2023 which is 238.% higher than last year in April 2022 when Rs 6.31 lakh was recovered as penalty.
WR said that the special drives have been launched after receipt of complaints that unauthorised passengers were traveling in AC services
WR runs a total of 79 services of AC locals with 6 rakes
AC locals have become a huge hit on the train and numbers are ever increasing due to scorching heat.
On an average 91,000 passengers took AC service per day in April 2023.
