More than 456 million people are on Spotify. This is what they listened to in 2022 according to Spotify Wrapped

Each year, Spotify Wrapped gives people some insight into their own listening habits and the listening habits of those around them.

Australians are waking up to their own personalised year in review, a ritual that happens annually via the world's most dominant audio streaming service.

And in 2022 the number one artist Australians couldn't get enough of was Taylor Swift.

Swift released Midnights in October. The album was an overwhelming success, with the pop star making history when she claimed the entire top ten on Billboard's Hot 100 chart.

Kamilaroi artist The Kid LAROI has come out on top as Australia's favourite homegrown talent of the year.

His track Stay, on which he collaborates with Justin Bieber, has also come out on top as the most-streamed local artist track.

He and Bieber topped Apple Music's global song chart for the year with the hit too.

And what was that one song that had people hitting repeat?

That went to As It Was by English pop star Harry Styles. It came out on top as the nation's most streamed song, with his album Harry's House Australia's most streamed album.

Styles also scored the most-streamed song of 2022 globally with As It Was streamed 1.6 billion times.

And while Kanye West, who has had quite the year, wasn't near the top globally, he was the fifth most streamed artist in Australia.

The rapper, who is now legally known as Ye, was dumped by multiple brands over anti-Semitic comments, with Forbes announcing he no longer has a place on their billionaires list. But Australians tuned in to his music.

Big names miss out

Think back to the biggest releases of the year and the artists who made the most noise when their albums (or singles) dropped and there are some notable omissions on these lists.

Beyoncé released Renaissance in July.

It arrived with plenty of fanfare and is available on Spotify, but failed to come out on top.

Beyoncé still has more than 47.8 million monthly listeners on the streaming service.

Adele is also missing from the top of these lists. Her album, 30, came out in November last year. It appears a year is a long time in music.

It's not just about music

It wasn't just music Aussies lapped up on Spotify.

Podcasts are all the rage too.

The Joe Rogan Experience attracted controversy earlier this year but that didn't stop the world from tuning in.

The podcast, which is available exclusively on Spotify, was the most popular podcast on the streaming service – both globally and locally here in Australia.

This is despite concerned figures, including scientists, professors and public health experts claiming his podcast promoted COVID-19 misinformation, prompting musicians such as Canadian artist Neil Young to request their music be removed from the platform.

ABC News Briefing was the second most popular podcast in Australia.

Global stats are same, same but different

When you cast your net globally, Taylor Swift is still popular, but not as popular as Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny, who relegated Swift to the number two spot when it came to the most-streamed artists.

Bad Bunny is the first artist to take out Spotify's top spot as the most-streamed artist three years in a row, generating more than 18.5 billion streams globally in 2022.

He also topped the most streamed album list with Un Verano Sin Ti.

New listening personality feature

Spotify has added a feature this year called Your Listening Personality with 16 different listening personality types categorising users according to their tastes in music.

Meanwhile, more than 40,000 music artists have participated this year in creating video messages for select fans.
