Millions of people across the UK with a physical disability, health condition, or a hidden illness such as dementia, autism or Parkinson's Disease which affects their walking ability, hold a Blue Badge to help them or their designated driver park closer to the places they need to go. In Scotland, around 235,779 people have a Blue Badge, while the number is significantly higher in England, at 2.29 million.
However, disabled drivers are now being warned about using their Blue Badges in popular European holiday destinations this summer due to an “outrageous” Brexit hangover that means they may not be accepted.
The UK Government has told badge-holders to “check with the embassy of the country you are travelling to for the latest developments”. Ministers are still negotiating with 11 nations on the status of UK Blue Badges, which were recognised across the EU until the country left the union two years ago.
