More than 14 million viewers tune in to watch England defeat Croatia

More than 14 million people tuned in to watch England’s victory over Croatia, ITV has said.

England’s Fifa World Cup opening clash also secured the highest peak audience of the year, with some 15.4 million viewers, the broadcaster added.

Thomas Tuchel’s men secured a thrilling 4-2 victory against Croatia in Dallas on Wednesday night.

An average of 14.2 million viewers watched the match on TV from kick-off to final whistle, while an average of 10 million viewers watched the entire coverage of the match from 8pm to 11.35pm.

The first half saw captain Harry Kane deliver two goals, but Croatia were hot on his heels to equalise.

England’s victory was secured with second-half goals from Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford.

On Friday night, Scotland play Morocco live on ITV1, STV, ITVX and STV Player with coverage from 10.15pm, and an 11pm kick off.

England vs Panama will be live from New Jersey on Saturday June 27 at 10pm UK time, on ITV1, ITVX, STV and STV Player, with coverage from 9.15pm.
